Important Update for Sunday (December 2)
We will return to our normal class and worship schedule this Sunday, December 2. The adult class will be taught in the Kresge Reading Room of Payson Library by Dave Lemley at 9am. Morning worship will be in Elkins at 10:15am, and Al, Eric, and Sara will co-preach a sermon titled, “God With Us” (Isaiah 43: 1-2), that will conclude the fall semester “Living Hope” series and lead us into the Advent season. Evening worship will be a special worship music night (with no sermon) led by Joshua Altrock in Stauffer Chapel at 5pm.

A Note from MITS
Greetings in Christ Jesus from Nairobi. The recent happenings in Malibu concerning the fires and the shootings down in Thousand Oaks have been very saddening and heartbreaking both to us and am sure to you too. We do not have answers and neither do we understand why they happened, but we wanted you and our church family there to know that the MITS family prayed during chapel and team meetings for our God to comfort you and encourage you as it was all happening and at the same time as you rise from this tragedies. God teaches us that we are all members of the same body and if one part hurts, the whole body hurts. As you all gather strength and trust in him, we are with you and will lift you more and more to our God because he can do more than we can ask. We love you and we know God loves you too. Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you. Blessings, Francis Mbuvi.

Three More Important UCC Updates

thanksgiving day 2018 flyer final-1We received three separate important updates this evening:

#1: Malibu Canyon Road is now open in both directions for all vehicle traffic. Drivers, however, should be mindful of falling debris in the canyon, including loose dirt and rocks. Due to fire suppression activities in the area, rocks may have become dislodged from water drops, and topsoil in certain areas may be unstable.

#2: Pepperdine will host a community-wide Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday, November 22, from 11am-2pm. We are hoping to have resident members who would be willing to provide food and/or volunteer to work at the event. There are email addresses on the flyer (above) for people to contact if they would like to volunteer and/or contribute food.

#3: We have a great opportunity to serve our Malibu Community: The Malibu Recovery Center (down by the Malibu Library) needs “greeters” next week. They could use 10 people a day for the following hours of operation: Monday – Wednesday 10 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Friday – Saturday 10 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. They plan two, four-hour shifts per day. I believe what is involved is welcoming people and showing them the assets available and how to move through the process. Please email hung.le@pepperdine.edu if you are interested or have questions. I hope we can get as many of us there to help as possible.

Updates

#1: I am sad to report that two more of our campus ministry interns lost their apartments at Calamigos. Please pray for all three who are suffering losses: Conrad Parker, Thea Riley, and Emily Sabino.

#2: Campus is accessible for our Sunday morning class and worship. Both will be in Stauffer Chapel this week. The PCH is open for those coming from Santa Monica, and Topanga is open for those coming from the Valley.

#3: The office will be closed on Monday because there will be a planned power outage on the Malibu campus from 8am-8pm. We will be finding locations to work, but no one will be at the office.

I look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow.

Important UCC Updates (UCC Family News, 11-14-18)

Heroes Garden
Heroes Garden: Charred but Unbroken & Preaching

Prayers for & Updates on Our Community
As early Christians were described in Scripture, we, too, are “scattered abroad.” Please continue to pray for our church family, Pepperdine community, and surrounding community. Pepperdine students, in particular, fully experienced back-to-back traumas with the violent shooting on “college night” in Thousand Oaks that claimed the life of a precious Pepperdine student and threatened many more followed by the raging wildfires that destroyed the possessions of several students and threatened so many more. Please pray for all the students. Others we know, of course, lost their homes to the wildfires, and our hearts are broken for them as well. According to Andy, around 70 of Pepperdine’s faculty/staff/students lost their homes, apartments, etc. — included in that number is one of our members, Conrad Parker, Seaver student and Campus Ministry intern.  Please pray especially for Conrad and be prepared to help. We believe we have made contact or received updates from everyone else in our church membership list through the info in the pictorial directory, and everyone else (and their homes) are safe. Please also pray for those who continue to work so hard fighting fires as well as those working hard at recovery efforts that take on many forms.

Important Updates for Sunday (November 18)
Since the students are gone from campus until after Thanksgiving break, here are our plans for this Sunday (as of now, of course):

#1: There will be an adult Bible class taught by Dave Lemley in Stauffer Chapel at 9am.  Children’s classes will remain in the Plaza Classrooms.

#2: Morning worship will begin at 10:15am in Stauffer Chapel. A nursery and children’s worship will be available in PLC (instead of Plaza Classrooms). The sermon is titled, “God Is Our Refuge” from Isaiah 52: 11-12.

#3: There will be no evening worship service again this Sunday since the students are gone.  We (University Church of Christ) are planning a special service with the Office of the Chaplain for the following Sunday evening (Nov 25) at 7pm when the students return. More information to come, but please make special plans to be there on that important night.

Financial Contributions
With so many of our church family scattered by the fires, please remember the financial needs of our church family, including the obvious importance of contributions to our benevolence fund. To donate specifically to fire relief, please earmark that on your contributions. Contact Linn Griffin with any questions about how to get your contributions in.

Final Sunday Update

An important update: As planned, we will hold an open dialogue in Payson Library at 9am on Sunday to process our feelings/emotions, and we will worship together in Elkins Auditorium at 10:15am. The sermon will be titled, “Peace, Be Still” (Mark 4: 35-41). The evening service, however, has been canceled. We will gather indoors, of course, but that is especially critical this weekend given the air quality. For those with limited outdoor exposure, please wear a protective mask.

Today

Brothers and sisters: Those of us who sheltered in place with students on campus have returned to our homes. Our prayers continue for those fighting fires, those grieving losses, those processing trauma, and our entire community.

If you know of anyone in our church family suffering, please let me know.

We plan to gather at 9am on Sunday morning in Payson Library for an open dialogue to process our emotions from this week and then worship at 10:15am in Elkins and 5pm in Stauffer and share together as a church family. My new sermon plan will be titled, “Peace, Be Still.”

Updates

Everyone: As God told Joshua, “Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

We are all over the place right now with emotion from the massacre in Thousand Oaks that took aim at our precious college students to the concerns of the fires that now threaten all of our communities.

Be strong and courageous, and do not be afraid. God is with us.

As I’m sure you know, the women’s ministry gathering tonight will not take place as scheduled. Instead, we are prepared to care for Pepperdine students and one another throughout the area. Many of us are here on campus walking/sitting alongside students, while others are in various places in the area avoiding the fires and awaiting news.

Stay in touch with each other, and stay prepared to be God’s hands and feet and hugs and muscles in the days to come.

As of now, we expect to gather at 9am on Sunday morning in Payson Library for an open dialogue to process our emotions from this week and then worship at 10:15am in Elkins and 5pm in Stauffer and share together as a church family.

I look forward to seeing all of you soon.

Prayers for Our Community: Agape Feast Canceled (UCC Family News, 11-8-18)

Prayers

Prayers for Our Community
Please be in constant prayer for our community. Several Pepperdine students, including several that work and spend time in our campus ministry, were there last night. All of the campus ministry students are physically safe but of course emotionally traumatized. There is more word circulating about a Pepperdine student that some in our church family know, but nothing is confirmed — please be in special prayer about that specifically. Our office is open and serving as a space for students to be and cry and pray and gather. Our resident members are invited to come and join us and be with students — the office is open until 10pm (at least) tonight. Sara & Eric’s office is planning a special prayer service in Smothers at Noon, and we will host a special “The Well” tonight at 8pm. In addition, we have canceled Sunday’s agape feast and will replace it with special gatherings at 9am (class in Payson); 10:15am (worship in Elkins), and 5pm (Stauffer). Please join us at as many gatherings as you can. Now is a time to come together.

Canceled: Agape Feast
Given the terrible tragedy in Thousand Oaks that has impacted our community, we have canceled the Agape Feast for this Sunday. Please join us for worship in Elkins at 10:15am and Stauffer at 5pm as we join together in love and prayer.

Women’s Fellowship Event: Dinner and Movie
Women’s Fellowship Dinner and a Movie is this Friday, November 9th at 6 pm at the home of Joline Gash. It will be a potluck dinner, so please plan to bring a main dish and a side or dessert. If possible, please let Jenny (at jenny@samparmelee.com) know if you are planning to attend. And don’t forget that Campus Ministry is offering babysitting service at the same time in case you need to drop off your kids before heading over for dinner.

Babysitting Night
The UCC service team is offering a free babysitting night this Friday night in the Plaza classrooms from 5-9 pm. Snacks will be provided but please make sure your child eats before or brings dinner with them! Please RSVP by texting Jessie Mandel at 678-665-5942. We look forward to seeing you there!

Shelby Warwar’s Wedding Shower
There will be a brunch honoring Shelby Warwar on Saturday, November 17, at 10am at Patty Atkisson’s home (30407 Passageway Place, Agoura Hills, CA, 91301). Shelby is registered at Theknot.com and the group gift will be a money tree. Diana Maiorca, Carolyn Nicks, and Patty Atkisson will accept gifts.

Senior Sunday
Seniors, please join us for dinner on November 18th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Brock House. Andy and Debby will host a wonderful home cooked meal and we will discuss “Finances After College.”  Please RSVP to linda.truschke@pepperdine.edu.

Benevolence Sunday Update
Our initial contribution on Benevolence Sunday was $25,475. We are still accepting contributions to this important fund!

Prayers

Dear Church Family:

You are waking up to texts and calls and emails of the terrible news of the shooting in Thousand Oaks. We are prepared to minister at this tragic time. The doors of the church office are already open this morning for students and others to be and talk and cry and pray. Resident members, please come be with students here today if you are able.

We will share more information throughout the day and in the days to come.

Please be praying for everyone impacted by this tragedy.

Yours,

Al
