Humans of UCC // Meet Nate and Falon Barton

bartons

1. First off, how did the two of you meet?
We are a Pepperdine couple through and through. We met briefly at a UCC house group event our freshman year, and we continued seeing each other working for the Graphic newspaper. We didn’t start talking or dating until our sophomore year, however. Falon was supposed to go to Buenos Aires with Pepperdine International programs, but she had to drop out for financial reasons. She was pretty disappointed. Nate had just finished a multi-day bike trip down the California coast, which was not only challenging, but also spiritually rewarding. We started working at the Graphic in the fall of 2013 — Nate as News Editor and Falon as Assistant News Editor — and we started dating within weeks. For our first date, Nate brought a couch from Pepperdine’s Krown Alpha dorm and planted it on Alumni field. We tried to watch a movie on the couch, but Nate forgot that WiFi doesn’t reach that far! Instead, we talked for hours under the stars.

2. Tell us the basics! For how long will you be in Uganda and what exactly will you be doing once you are in there?
On June 15, we will fly to Jinja, Uganda to work with a nonprofit we both love called Kibo Group International. We’ll live in Uganda for a year, and our primary role will be to run Kibo’s communications and social media. Our plan is to work with churches and with Kibo projects on the ground through video, photography, graphic design, writing, and more. Some of our specific goals are to create a documentary for marketing purposes, to write a children’s book, and to serve the Ugandan staffers who do the actual work of improving people’s wellbeing through community and development.

3. If you could each describe your feelings in regards to the move in one word, what would it be and why?
Exhilarated and apprehensive! We are excited to leave and to serve God with our gifts, but we also know that there are a lot of unknown challenges we will encounter. It’ll be a great adventure.

4. What are you most looking forward to?
We’re looking forward to giving back. We’ve enjoyed Pepperdine so much, and we’ve appreciated all the ways Pepperdine has poured into us. But we’re antsy, and we are anxious to give back. The idea of doing things that benefit others after six years of school sounds fulfilling and rewarding. Nate also can’t wait to reconnect with so many people in Uganda from his childhood.

5. What words of encouragement do you have for those who are scared to take their own bold leap of faith?
If you have community, the worst-case scenario is not as bad as when you’re alone. Rockets need a launch pad, planes need a runway, and people need community.

Nate and Falon Barton

Missions Ministry Note
Nicole Worthington, Predisan’s new Chief Development Officer, wrote that they have been able to provide the mountain villages of Olancho with clean water, expand operations to 35 medical clinics, and conduct outreaches “to improve the physical, economic, and environmental health to 150,000 in these remote villages,” with one result being “a surge in the delivery of healthy babies. One of the grandmothers shared tears of joy . . . because now there will be medical help available to her grandchildren as they grow.” Another part of Predisan’s work, even more central to its mission, is proclaiming Jesus, which “strengthens spiritual development and contributes to blessings much greater than our physical needs . . . . Dr. Madrid, our board members, doctors, nurses, missionaries, and community workers join me in thanking members of the University Church of Christ for their generous partnership and support to demonstrate the heart and compassion of Christ to the people of Honduras.”
