Update on Helen Young
Helen Young, who celebrated her 99th birthday on August 31, will be moving to Lubbock, Texas by October 1.   She will live in a newly built assisted living community which specializes in memory care. It is located a few blocks from Lubbock Christian University, whose founders included Norvel Young and Helen’s brother, F.W. Mattox. In Lubbock Helen will live near her daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Steven Lemley, and Helen’s granddaughter Amy Cary and her young family. Helen and her husband Norvel started their family and served in ministry at the Broadway Church of Christ in Lubbock before coming to Pepperdine in 1957.  It is a place full of family and enduring friendships.  In fact, three other residents in this home were Helen’s friends during her time at the Broadway Church. Helen’s family –  Youngs, Jacksons, and Lemleys – deeply appreciate the love and kindness Helen has received from this body of believers! She has loved and been loved here. Her sixty years with the Pepperdine community were grounded by her church family. Your care for her in the last fifteen years, especially, has meant so much. She leaves her California family and this family of faith a legacy of devotion and gracious hospitality. She carries with her your legacy of love into this next chapter of life. If you would like to send her a card, send it to: Helen Young, c/o Emily Lemley, 4614 87th St, Lubbock, TX 79424.

CM Intern Team
Dusty, Linda, and Teller Working (Out) With the New CM Intern Team!

Out of the Office
I (Al) will be out of the office from Tuesday through Friday this week.  I have the honor of attending a retreat with (and speaking to) a large number of Pepperdine sophomores this week. I’m not sure how well I will be able to keep up with emails but will return messages ASAP!

Kickoff Sunday!
Three big things to remember on Sunday:

#1: Come to Bible class at 9am!  The children will all be in Plaza Classroom 191 for the Rising Up Ceremony. The teens, college students, and adults will all be in the Fireside Room for a class that will preview our fall semester classes.  Don’t miss Bible class this week!

#2: Come to our worship assembly at 10:15am!  It should be a full house in Elkins Auditorium with lots of new students to meet.  Meet every one you can!  Children’s Worship will meet in Plaza Room 190 for the entire service!  We do not have an alternative service planned, but if completely run out of space, some of our regular members can gather in the Plaza Classrooms to spend time in prayer for all of the new students God has sent our way.

#3: Bring a dessert to share with our new students in the Plaza after the worship service (at approximately 11:30am)!  We will have a great opportunity to really visit then.

We return to Elkins Auditorium for Sunday worship this weekend.  Since I will be officiating a wedding in South Texas this weekend (and melting in the heat!), Eric Wilson agreed to preach in my absence. His sermon is titled, “The Crunch of Identity” (Hebrews 12:29-13:16). Please be on the lookout for a hundred student leaders who will worship with our church family – be sure to get to know them!

Singing Class on Sunday
Brad Griffin will teach a combined adult/teens singing class in Stauffer Chapel at 9am on Sunday (but the worship assembly at 10:15am will be in Elkins!). Brad encourages you to be thinking of a song you would like to sing from the Songs of Faith and Praise book.

This Sunday will be the final Sunday for our Summer in Stauffer. Classes for all ages are at 9am and the worship assembly follows at 10:15am. Dave Lemley will teach the adult class on Mount Sinai & Mount Zion. Actually, he won’t teach it “on” Mount Sinai or Mount Zion — it will be “about” those mountains and taught “on” Mount Pepperdine. 🙂  The morning sermon will come from Hebrews 12: 4-29 and is titled, “Lessons from the Fire.”

Servant Leaders Meeting
There will be a brief servant leader meeting in the church office following the worship assembly on Sunday.

Celebration for Youth Group Graduates
Join us as the Breeding’s Condo (24358 Baxter) to honor our graduating youth group members on Monday evening, August 7, from 7-8:30pm. This will be a time to share a word of encouragement as our students head off to college. Please bring a snack or dessert to share.

Praise Team List
We only have sopranos on our praise team list so far! If you are willing to share your singing gift with the church family by serving on a praise team occasionally, please let me (Al) know and indicate whether you sing soprano, alto, tenor, and/or bass.

Thank You Notes:

Dear University Church Family–On behalf of the Lowe/Scott-Lowe family we want to express our appreciation for your love, concern and prayers during Taylor’s recovery from his serious hiking accident.  He is recovering well.  His surgeon says he is on the trajectory for a complete recovery. With deep gratitude, Dennis, Emily and Taylor.

Thank you so much for the support you have provided following my recent back surgery.  Your prayers have been answered and will continue to be answered as I continue my rehab. Your calls, e-mails, cards, and words of encouragement have sustained us. Thank you too for the delicious meals brought our way. We are so grateful for the love this congregation has shown our family.  Steve and Janet Davis
