August 25 Edition

Hello, Church Family!

“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.”

-Isaiah 55:1-2

I was thankful to be able to attend the Annual Prayer Service for Pepperdine faculty and staff on Monday morning, and a paraphrase of Andy Benton’s words is still echoing in my head: what am I bringing to the table this year to nourish those around me?  How can we welcome family, friends, strangers, and enemies to our tables this year to feast on God’s love—love that truly satisfies and comes to us without price?

-Laura Fehlbaum

New Student and Parent Dessert Reception This Sunday, August 28, we are hosting a dessert reception for new students and their parents immediately following our worship service.  Instead of greeting them outside Fieldhouse Fieldhouse this year, we are trying something new, but the goal is the same: get to know our new students and their families. Please plan to bring cookies, brownies, or other light finger desserts with you to church this Sunday morning.

No Fall Kick-Off Worship in Firestone Fieldhouse This Year This year, we are NOT having a worship service in Firestone Fieldhouse to kick off the academic year.  Instead, this Sunday, we will have our kick-off in Elkins with the option of an “overflow ” service if it ends up being needed.

Elder Selection In the process of selecting new elders, we are accepting proposals for potential elders now through Sunday, September 11. Proposal forms and envelopes will be available at the back of Elkins each Sunday morning. Instructions for completing and returning the form are on the form. If you have questions, contact Chris Bauman or Liz Mancuso. You hopefully received an email from Chris Bauman on Saturday, August 20, with additional details on this process.  If you did not, please email him so he can forward that message to you.

Brock House Potluck — Sunday, September 11, following our church service is our UCC Annual Brock House Church Potluck. More details will come in the next couple of weeks. For now, please mark your calendars to come and eat with us, and start thinking about what you would like to bring with you. Also, any and all able-bodied men, women, and children: please let Kanet Thomas or Stacy Rouse know if you can help with set up.  We could use help beginning at 8:00 a.m. with tables, umbrellas, chairs, ice, water, etc. There are also volunteer roles like shopping for items ahead of time, helping with A/V, helping the day of with accepting dishes and putting items on table, etc.

Fall Adult Bible Classes — We have two new Bible classes available this fall:

C. S. Lewis and the Weight of Glory: Experiencing Faith in a New Way This class, taught by Gary Selby, begins on September 11 and will continue through October 16.  It is held at 9:00 a.m. in Appleby Center 280.

Envelopes with checks inside made out to School On Wheels, with “school supplies” in the memo, are also greatly appreciated. Our congregation is always generous as we remember those students in kindergarten up through high school who are homeless. School on Wheels serves homeless students all over Ventura, Los Angeles, and Orange Counties—yes, some right here in Malibu. If you are interested in serving one or two hours per week as a one-on-one tutor for a homeless child, please contact Betty Glass, go to schoolonwheels.org, or (805) 641-1678.

August 18 Edition

Hello, Church Family!

“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’”

-Matthew 28:18-20

I so appreciated Eric Wilson’s sermon last Sunday.  Let the season of baptism for our church and community begin!

August 11 Edition

Hello, Church Family!

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

-Jesus, in Matthew 6:1-4

When I was in college, one of my friends started a subset club of Campus Ministry called ARK (“Acts of Random Kindness”).  They would go around campus, blessing people with anonymous treats and notes of encouragement.  What can we each do in secret this week to give to the financially needy, the emotionally needy, or the other people God has placed in our paths?

August 4 Edition

Hello, Church Family!

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”

-1 Corinthians 9:24-27

The opening ceremony for the Summer Olympics is tomorrow!  As we watch these awesome athletes compete, let’s be inspired to give everything we have in our spiritual race.
