July 28 Edition

Hello, Church Family!

“How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!’ But they have not all obeyed the Gospel. For Isaiah says, ‘Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?’ So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for ‘Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.’”

-Romans 10:14-18

I am under the weather this week and largely without a voice.  In remembering Danny Mathews’ powerful communion message from a few weeks ago (about allowing all to hear the Gospel), I got to thinking: Have I lost my voice for the Gospel?  Faith comes from hearing…  Are we talking?

-Laura Fehlbaum

Farewell to the Kemmerers — We are so thankful for the blessings Tyler, Rebecca, James, and Elise Kemmerer have been to the University Church for the past few years.  As the Kemmerers move to Shanghai to be the Pepperdine International Program faculty family, we want to wish them well as they most likely will not return to Pepperdine after the 2016-2017 academic year concludes.  In addition to having a prayer of blessing over them during this Sunday’s service, we will also have a copy of Above Los Angeles for the church family to sign.  Please look for it on the back bench over the next few Sundays.

Special Bible Class This Sunday! This summer, Pepperdine is hosting the CrossWays Youth Conference.  Over 100 high school students from across the country are coming to Pepperdine for a week of Bible study, reflection, and fellowship. This Sunday, our adult and youth group Bible classes will join with the CrossWays attendees for a unified Bible class time. The class will be taught by Jeff Walling in Elkins Auditorium at 9:00 a.m. This is a unique opportunity for our fellowship to gather with these students, welcome them to Pepperdine, and to spend time with them in Bible study. Please join the group this Sunday morning.

Taste of Kenya “Thank You” Lunch — The Kenya team is thankful for your love and involvement in the youth group trip to Kenya for Made in the Streets!  In gratefulness, please plan to attend their “Taste of Kenya” thank you lunch. They will serve you an authentic meal of Chapati (very good bread!!), grilled meat made with Kenyan spices, fruit, and more on Sunday, August 7, after church at Baxter Park on campus.

Captioning Services — In an effort to better include members and guests with hearing difficulties, the University Church of Christ will be testing a captioning service during the month of July. The captioning can be viewed on any electronic device with access to the Internet.

To access captions for our worship service, simply email captionucc@gmail.com and you will immediately be sent back a link. Click the link during worship and read along. The link can be bookmarked for use in future services.

July 14 Edition

Hello, Church Family!

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved […]  For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

-Ephesians 2, verses 4-5 and 8-9

What a gift we have from our Father!  Grace that saves us.

July 7 Edition

Hello, church family!

“Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.”

-Isaiah 58:6-8

Another week of tragic news.  Let’s not become paralyzed, but instead let’s get out there and practice this kind of fasting.

-Laura Fehlbaum
