Update from Peter & Katy; Benevolence Sunday Approaches; Wedding Invitation; Evening Beach Service; Annual Harvest Party; Agape Feast (UCC Family News, 10-11-18)

Won by One will be leading our Sunday morning worship this Sunday!

Update from Peter & Katy
Dear church family, the following note is from Katy. In addition, I (Al) ask that we all guard our conversations so as to protect their precious children and be sure to approach Peter & Katy with positivity and support (instead of sorrow and sympathy). Here is Katy’s note: “Thank you for waiting and praying alongside us as we waited on pathology results and then took some time to process as a family. We learned about a week ago that Peter’s tumor was a grade 4 glioblastoma (don’t google it!). This is a very aggressive type and requires radiation and chemo starting right away. We have felt a whole range of emotions over the last week. We are ready to face this thing head on and are choosing to face it optimistically. We welcome your support, encouragement and prayers. We love you all!”

Benevolence Sunday Approaches
Our annual collection for serving the poor and marginalized in our community and world is coming up on Sunday, November 4. Starting this Sunday, we will highlight some of the organizations that we support through this contribution in anticipation of our collection on November 4. Please be planning for this special day.

Wedding Invitation
Shelby Warwar and Teller Emmer would like to invite members of the University Church of Christ to their wedding on December 2, 2018 at Limoneira Ranch in Santa Paula. The ceremony will take place at 2pm with a reception to follow at the same site. Please RSVP here by November 2, 2018.

Evening Beach Service on October 21
Our evening worship service will move to Westward Beach (at Tower 1, next to the building that has restrooms) for one evening on Sunday, October 21. Please make plans to join us at 5pm for this special opportunity to worship together by the ocean.

Annual Harvest Party on October 28
Please join us for our annual Harvest Party at the Warwar house (4188 Ventavo Rd, Moorpark, CA) on October 28 immediately after our morning church service, starting at approximately noon. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be provided, so please bring a side dish and a dessert. Anyone (kids, college students, and resident members) who would like to join a pumpkin carving contest should bring their own pumpkins and carving tools. If college students need a ride to Moorpark, please contact Lily Spirtos ahead of time. Drivers, please be sure to park on the side of the road next to the Warwar’s house to keep from inconveniencing their neighbors.

Chris Doran, Al Sturgeon, Kanet Thomas, and Eric Wilson are working together with other UCC members to plan this special day. More information will come later, but for now we would like to collect RSVPs as best we can as well as information on food allergies as we plan for this special feast. Please share your RSVP and any food allergies to al.sturgeon@pepperdine.edu.

Humans of UCC // Meet Rachel Yoshimura!

rachel

We are bringing back the “Humans of UCC” segment of this blog! Everyone, meet Rachel Yoshimura. She is a beautiful, radiant member of our church family as well as Campus Ministry’s Graduate Apprentice.

1. What do you enjoy most about being the CM graduate apprentice?
I’m surrounded by gifted and passionate people on our CM team. I have the privilege of helping make our Team Leaders’ and Campus Ministers’ visions come to fruition.

2. What is one fun fact about you?
I learned to surf before I could swim.

3. What is one particular area of your life where you see God moving right now?
I see God moving in my understanding of His grace. God’s grace became a watered-down term to me, but lately God has been making me think deeply about His grace. His grace is so confusing to me – How does God forgive the weight of all our sin and want to partner with us in His ministry? Why does he do these things? I’ve been left in beautiful and confusing awe at these questions. Our God is truly unfathomable.

4. Is there anything our church family can be praying over you?
Please pray that God would teach me more about serving humbly and that He would continue to shape me according to His calling on my life.

– The Thompsons are still awaiting test results. Please continue to pray for the best possible news on the pathology report.

Prayers for Peter Thompson
As we posted earlier this week, Peter Thompson has been diagnosed with a brain tumor and will be undergoing surgery today (Thursday). The diagnosis was made Monday following a period of time of symptoms that had been increasing in intensity. We are asking for prayers for God’s presence in this situation, for comfort in trouble, and for Peter’s health to be restored. Please also remember Katy, Liam, Adelaide, and Zion as their family circles around Peter. We will provide an update on the surgery this Sunday and identify opportunities to serve the Thompsons.

New Members!
We are so excited to officially welcome new members to the University Church of Christ: Blake Mastalerz and Andy and Kammie Swartz!

Al, Hannah Kate and Marcus had a great week and are looking forward to this week at Kids Club (again at 4 pm in Baxter Park). We are looking forward to a year of building relationships with each other and our community through play, Bible study, and special activities. See you on Thursday at 4!

Night Office Hours
The University Church Office is now open until 10 pm on weekdays! Join us to hang out, study or attend a specific event. As always, we are located in Plaza 193 (across from the fountain). Also, we have coffee flowing daily from 12pm-10pm!

Prayer Ministry
If you have prayer requests, you may email the prayer ministry at kari_coppinger@yahoo.com or write your request on a prayer card at church (check the welcome table). Our current prayer challenge is to pick someone from our congregation and pray for them. Tell them you’re praying and ask if they have prayer requests if you want. You may pick someone you know or pick a category of people whom you may not know yet (i.s., our new students or our Sunday school teachers).

Prayers for Peter Thompson

The elders learned yesterday that Peter Thompson has been diagnosed with a brain tumor and will be undergoing surgery this Thursday. The diagnosis was just made yesterday following a period of time with symptoms that had been increasing in intensity. We have been in prayer for Peter and call on the prayers of the congregation. Pray for God’s presence in this situation, for comfort in trouble, and for Peter’s health to be restored. Please also remember Katy, Liam, Adelaide, and Zion as their family circles around Peter. We will provide an update on the surgery this Sunday and identify opportunities to serve the Thompsons. In addition, everyone is invited to a prayer service for him and his family today, September 11, at 4:30 pm in Stauffer Chapel.
